PLEASE Put a lid on the dramatics

Obama apologizes for saying troops lives’ “wasted”.

“During an appearance Monday in Nashua, New Hampshire, he apologized again, telling reporters he meant to criticize the civilian leadership of the war, not those serving in the military.”

I’m so burned out on nitpickers and drama people! Anyone with a brain understands what he said and what it did or didn’t mean.

Boston PD to pay $5.1 million in Civil Suit

this morning on Newsvine -

The Boston Police Department is getting rid of the pepper-pellet guns blamed for the death of a college student during Red Sox celebrations more than two years ago…

Boston paid a $5.1 million settlement to Snelgrove’s parents.

There were 2 comments on this report, both questioning the family’s motivation for filing the lawsuit.

“I’m not sure why, but I’m always bothered by families seeking money over the death of a family member. What good will the money do? It won’t bring the person back. Meanwhile, they enjoy their newfound wealth brought on by the death of a loved on.

It just doesn’t seem right to me.”

and

“I’ve always felt that once you start looking for a settlement then it becomes about the money and not about your loved one. Of course, I’ve never had anyone close to me killed in a similar situation so I guess I don’t know how I would react. i would hope I would maintan some dignity. “

Are they serious?

If I intentionally shot someone in the eye with a pellet gun and that person died as a result - what would follow? Criminal charges would be filed and I could be sued in civil court for damages. Individuals cannot personally file criminal charges so the only option is a civil suit.

When the criminal justice systems forces accountability it’s justice. When a family forces accountability - it’s called greed. You betcha.

I left this comment-

isn’t about the money.

It’s about accountability. If there are no consequences or punishments, there is no motivation to correct/improve behaviors or policies. And motivation is usually proportional to the depth of the ouch felt from punishment. Government (and industry) feel pain in the pocketbook more than anywhere else.

Fiction or Historical Recap?

What’s your guess? Is this an excerpt from a work of fiction or a history book?

“What no one seemed to notice,” said a colleague of mine, a philologist, “was the ever widening gap, …between the government and the people… And it became always wider. You know, it doesn’t make people close to their government to be told that this is a people’s government, a true democracy, or to be enrolled in civilian defense, or even to vote. All this has little, really nothing, to do with knowing one is governing.

“What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if the people could not understand it, it could not be released because of national security….

“This separation of government from people, this widening of the gap, took place so gradually and so insensibly, each step disguised (perhaps not even intentionally) as a temporary emergency measure or associated with true patriotic allegiance or with real social purposes. And all the crises and reforms (real reforms, too) so occupied the people that they did not see the slow motion underneath, of the whole process of government growing remoter and remoter.

In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.”

No. It isn’t an overview of the current state of government in the US. It’s how the Nazi’s came into power.

If you’re not scared, maybe you should be….

Nutrition or Genetics?

I take excellent care of my 4 yr old daughter. To imply that I don’t, on any level, is a place that the devil himself should fear treading.

H couldn’t wait to make her world debut so she chose express delivery and came 2 months early. She weighed 4 lbs 3 oz and was healthy as a horse. She’s currently 39 1/2″ tall, and weighs 31 lbs.

I don’t know what the “expected” numbers are for her age, and
-I don’t care.

Call me crazy but I prefer to focus on a healthy lifestyle rather than forcing her to fit the “expected” box of physical criteria.

Last week we went for her round of school immunizations. While we were there they checked her weight and height. And according to the woman we now refer to as the nutrition nazi, she’s one notch below the expected height and weight for her age.

She’s always been a notch below the “expected” and the issue is easily resolved when I explain she was 2 months premature.

not this time though-
The nutrition nazi informed me -”all preemies are caught up to their age group by 4 yrs old”. She followed up with a barrage of questions about eating habits and nutrition, all in this down her nose superior tone that implied I wasn’t taking proper care of my daughter.

I let her finish her little tirade, then replied in my sweetest voice…

“interesting theory. But I wonder…considering her oldest sister is 5′ 7″ and weighs 110 lbs, her other sister is 5′ 4″ and weighs 95 lbs, her brother - tall and skinny like their dad. 6′, 170 lbs. Are they all malnourished or could it simply be genetics?”

bitch.

Meth Offender Database Registry -really bad idea

MSNBC discusses why a registry for meth offenders is a terrible idea.

“The problem with these registries is that we’re creating a class of untouchables within our society who cannot rent apartments or secure employment,” said Jonathan Turley, a criminal defense attorney and law professor at George Washington University. “When you diminish the likelihood that ex-felons can live and work in society, you increase the chances that they will return to criminal behavior.”

”It’s symbolic,” said Bill Piper, director of national affairs at the nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance, which advocates reform of harsh drug laws. “It makes politicians who are really not doing anything look like they are.”

Even worse, he said, it diverts funds that could be better used elsewhere.

“We need to invest scarce public resources into educating the public about the use of meth and providing high quality treatment options to fight addiction, not create an intrusive public registry,” he said.

Houston SWAT kills 17 yr old

Unarmed 17 yr old Daniel Castillo, Jr. was shot dead by Houston SWAT.

According to his sister, Castillo was shot just below the eye as he rose up from his bed after hearing her scream. She was holding a 1-year-old child just a few feet from the shooting.

How many innocent people will lose their life to prison or death because of bad information from informants? Informants are the lowest order of scum. Manipulative, self-serving back-stabbers. Yet  police and DA’s tout them as reliable and truthful sources of information. Enough already.
